Natural Sensation and Wood | How Aēsop Creates Memorable Spaces Through Sustainable Timber Design
A visit to an Aēsop store is more than a shopping experience. Beyond its signature fragrance, visitors are welcomed into a calm environment where natural materials, gentle lighting, and thoughtful architecture work together. Wood is one of the defining elements of this atmosphere—not as decoration, but as a material that expresses authenticity, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
Across different countries, Aēsop incorporates local materials and cultural influences into each store, demonstrating how timber can shape meaningful spaces while supporting environmental responsibility.

Wood Circulation: Bringing Sustainability and Local Craft Together

For Aēsop's designers, wood is more than a construction material—it is a bridge between architecture, culture, and nature.

At the Thonglor store in Bangkok, reclaimed timber from the original building was carefully preserved and reused throughout the renovation. Traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery was incorporated to celebrate local craftsmanship while reducing unnecessary material waste.

By combining recycled wood with regional building techniques, the store reflects Thailand's architectural identity while creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Every timber surface tells a story of reuse, cultural respect, and environmental awareness, allowing visitors to experience a deeper connection between design and place.

Giving Wooden Pallets a Second Life

Sustainability extends beyond architecture into product transportation.

Recognizing that international logistics consume large numbers of wooden pallets, Aēsop launched projects that transformed used pallets into functional products instead of discarding them.

In 2022, the company partnered with Smooth Worksite Interior Design to create chairs and storage cabinets made entirely from reclaimed pallet wood. These products were donated to organizations supporting local communities.

The following year, Aēsop collaborated with MATA Product Design to expand the concept into animal welfare. Recycled timber was used to build outdoor shelters, resting areas, and rehabilitation equipment for rescued senior and disabled dogs. These facilities were donated to Taiwanese animal welfare organizations, demonstrating how discarded wood can continue serving society in meaningful ways.

This approach shows that sustainability is not only about reducing waste—it is also about creating lasting social value.

Reimagining Existing Materials Through Local Design

When Aēsop first opened its temporary store in Taipei 101, the interior was designed with future reuse in mind.

Shelving systems were built using environmentally friendly F1-grade plywood so they could later be dismantled and repurposed rather than discarded. After relocating to its permanent store, the original timber shelving was carefully removed along the grain and reconstructed into decorative wall panels with a new metallic finish.

The store also reflects Taipei's urban identity through localized design. A custom-painted glass washbasin references the skyline viewed from Taipei 101, while corrugated steel panels echo the layered appearance of Taiwan's traditional metal buildings. The combination of timber, steel, and glass creates a dialogue between modern architecture and local history.

Sustainability Begins with Responsible Material Choices

Aēsop has often emphasized that sustainability should be demonstrated through actions rather than claims.

Its retail environments illustrate this philosophy by allowing timber to quietly shape the customer experience alongside light, texture, and scent. Instead of dominating the design, wood creates warmth, comfort, and authenticity while respecting its natural character.

At TFSI, we share the same belief that responsible material selection is the foundation of sustainable architecture and design.

We source legally harvested timber from responsibly managed forests and provide FSC-certified wood, engineered timber, specialty panels, and customized processing solutions. By helping architects, designers, manufacturers, and builders choose the right material for every application, we support projects that balance performance, aesthetics, and environmental responsibility.

Sustainability begins with every timber decision. At TFSI, we are committed to helping every piece of wood achieve its greatest value while contributing to a more sustainable future.
