As reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions becomes increasingly important worldwide, the hospitality industry is also exploring new ways to make buildings more environmentally responsible.
Located in Saijo City, Ehime Prefecture, Itomachi Hotel 0 is a notable example of this transition. Designed by Kengo Kuma & Associates, the project is recognized as Japan's first zero-energy hotel, combining energy-saving technology, natural materials, and regional characteristics within one hospitality environment.

Architecture Designed in Harmony with Nature
Itomachi Hotel 0 was designed not simply as a place to stay, but as part of the surrounding landscape and community.
The property consists of three main areas: a two-story reception and café building, the main hotel building, and independent villas with private outdoor baths. Together, they provide 57 guest rooms, including 50 rooms across four room types in the main building and seven villa rooms.
One of the project's most distinctive architectural features is its continuous sloping roof. The timber expression and roofline take inspiration from nearby Mount Ishizuchi, creating a visual connection between the hotel and the surrounding mountains.
At the center of the property, a courtyard and spring-fed pond reference Saijo's famous natural spring water, known locally as Uchiki. Water, greenery, and architecture come together to form a calm garden-like environment that welcomes visitors into the landscape.
Designing Toward Zero Energy
Energy performance is one of the most important elements of Itomachi Hotel 0. To reduce overall energy demand, the building incorporates high-performance features such as double-glazed windows, improved insulation, and energy-efficient equipment.
Solar panels installed on the roof generate renewable electricity, helping the property move toward a balance between the energy it consumes and the energy it produces.
Through this integrated approach to energy conservation and renewable power generation, the project achieved ZEB certification, demonstrating how hospitality architecture can combine guest comfort with lower environmental impact.
Rather than relying on a single green technology, the project approaches sustainability as a complete building system—from architecture and insulation to equipment and renewable energy.
Interior Design Inspired by the Local Landscape
The connection with Ehime continues inside the hotel.
Dugout Architects, responsible for the interior and landscape design, drew inspiration from local natural features, including Saijo's spring water and Iyo Aoshima stone.
Timber, stone, water, and a soft color palette work together to create interiors that feel calm and closely connected to the surrounding environment. Instead of overwhelming guests with decorative elements, the design allows the natural character of each material to shape the atmosphere.
The regional experience also extends to food. The hotel's restaurant and café incorporate seasonal vegetables and fruits sourced from Ehime Prefecture, allowing visitors to experience local culture not only through architecture, but also through taste.
Timber as Part of Sustainable Architecture
Wood is an important element in the environmental concept behind Itomachi Hotel 0. Trees absorb carbon dioxide while growing, and part of that carbon remains stored in timber throughout the service life of a wooden product or building component. When sourced from responsibly managed forests, wood is also a renewable material that can support lower-carbon construction.
Compared with many conventional building materials, timber generally requires less energy during manufacturing. Its natural thermal properties can also contribute to comfortable building environments when incorporated into an appropriate architectural and insulation system.
Wood can also be reused, recycled, or repurposed in different ways at the end of a product's original service life, supporting the principles of a more circular material economy.
For these reasons, timber is becoming increasingly important as architects search for ways to combine carbon reduction, renewable resources, natural aesthetics, and building performance.

Itomachi Hotel 0 demonstrates that sustainability does not need to come at the expense of comfort or design.
By bringing together renewable energy, energy-efficient building systems, timber, local materials, regional food, and landscape design, the project creates a hospitality experience closely connected to its environment.
