The texture is moderately rough but uniform, and quarter-sawn materials sometimes exhibit attractive ribbon-like patterns. There are no growth rings, and the rays are moderate to fine.

Production Areas and Distribution

Red Meranti is sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia. It is highly favored by architects and designers for its high luster and excellent workability.

Applications

Red Meranti is a relatively soft wood that is not resistant to termites. Red Merantican be dried using conventional methods and glued using standard procedures. While sapwood readily accepts preservatives, heartwood penetration is negligible with current commercial processes. Red Merantican can be painted, stained, or polished, but Red Merantican’s open grain necessitates surface filling before finishing. This species machines well to a smooth finish and readily accepts standard fittings and fasteners. Red Merantican is commonly used in decorative applications including veneers, flooring, fine woodworking, mouldings, plywood, and turned products. Red Merantican is also frequently used in furniture making and carvings.
